The history of Tim Du Toit is a story of one unique, resolutely strong willed man in the early years, consolidation, vision and growth in the middle years and imagination, re-invention and exceptional growth in recent years. It is a story of hard work, determination and, above all, professional integrity.

The firm was fortunate to be blessed with strong leaders when the fact of the merger presented itself. Exceptional vision and decisive action turned this potential crisis into one of promise and opportunity. Our doors were finally opened to other clients and, having built exceptional experience, skill and acumen over more than half a century specialising in financial services law, other financial institutions in the country responded. Not only were we able to broaden our client base successfully in a relatively short period of time, we widened the net. We opened offices in various locations in and around Gauteng and discerningly added different legal disciplines to our repertoire, all of which appear on other pages on this site.

The recent years have seen the firm grow at an exceptional rate, expanding our client base to include all the commercial banks in South Africa, including their specialised private banking and commercial property finance interests, but also finding a substantial niche in the booming South African property market. Again, vision proved significant, as we ventured into this market as participants during 1998, ostensibly at the worst possible moment, with interest rates in the country at its highest ever levels. Our property development company came through this experience relatively unscathed though, and has subsequently become a successful enterprise in its own right. More importantly, the lessons learnt as participants during that period have equipped us to understand this volatile business better and, quite specifically, the special needs of our clients engaged therein. We now represent some of the most successful property developers in the country, in relation to both commercial and residential developments, and are able to offer advice on structure, finance and risk inherent in this type of venture.

Our understanding of the business of finance, accumulated over a significant period during which time the only constant has been change, means that we are well placed to continue offering exceptional service to our clients in the banking and financial services sector, including unique reporting, securities preparation and pipeline management tools driven by software applications developed by ourselves to better our quality, increase our production whilst bettering established turn-around times and increase our service offering to far beyond that available anywhere else. The commitment to service excellence, and the technological advances demanded by an ever changing market, remains a constant focus.

There is a common misconception that the firm's founding fathers left us only the ability to find humour in our lives and enjoyment and fulfilment in our work, along with a general inability to take ourselves too seriously. This is true of us, off course, but this is merely the golden thread that weaves around and through the cornerstones they put down all those years ago, woven in with the special fabric contributed by hundreds of men and women over more than seventy years of practice, into the diverse tapestry we present today, a tapestry that will never quite be finished.
